What Is Sleep Debt?

Sleep debt describes sleep missed over time. This tool estimates a gap against the target you choose; it does not measure your exact sleep need.

How Do You Calculate Sleep Debt?

Set a nightly goal, enter estimated time asleep, and leave unknown nights blank. The tool counts only the nights you enter.

Estimated net shortfall against your target = total target sleep − total reported sleep.

For example, an 8-hour target over 7 nights is 56 hours. If you slept 49 hours in total, your estimated sleep debt is 7 hours. Longer nights offset shorter ones in this total. Check nights below target too: a zero gap does not prove you have recovered from earlier sleep loss.

Can You Catch Up on Sleep?

Extra sleep can reduce sleepiness after a shortfall, but some effects of repeated sleep restriction can remain after one recovery night. Recovery is not a simple hour-for-hour repayment. Read whether you can catch up on sleep and how long recovery may take.

What Causes Sleep Debt?

Late bedtimes, early alarms, or disrupted nights can leave you short of sleep. If you allow enough time but still struggle to sleep, a schedule calculation cannot explain the cause. See sleep debt versus sleep deprivation.

How to Reduce Sleep Debt

Protect a realistic sleep window on regular nights. Plan tonight's bedtime around your alarm, or check how much sleep you need by age before setting your target.

Sleep Debt Calculator FAQ

How is sleep debt calculated?

It compares total reported sleep with your nightly target multiplied by nights entered. Blank nights are skipped. A total above your target appears as extra sleep.

Can one long night repay sleep debt?

A longer night may help you recover, but recovery is not always immediate or one-for-one. The calculator nets the week for simple planning and shows how many nights still fell below your target.

Should I include naps?

You may include naps if your target represents total sleep in a 24-hour period. Use the same approach for each recorded day so the comparison stays consistent.

Should I enter time in bed or time asleep?

Enter your best estimate of time actually asleep. Time in bed can include time spent falling asleep or awake during the night.

Is sleep debt the same as sleep deprivation?

Sleep debt emphasizes an accumulated shortfall. Sleep deprivation means not getting enough sleep, whether once or repeatedly. Neither label establishes a diagnosis.

Is this calculator a medical assessment?

No. It compares self-reported durations with a target you choose and cannot measure sleep quality, diagnose a sleep problem, or determine your exact biological sleep need.
